Who Needs Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial myofunctional disorders affect people of all ages. When diagnosed early in children, treatment can lead to optimal craniofacial growth and development. However, even adults can experience significant benefits from improved orofacial function and habits, such as better sleep, healthier breathing, and less anxiety.

Is Snoring Normal?

The short answer is no. Snoring is considered to be a disordered respiratory function. A form of mouth breathing that causes the upper airway muscles to become lazy. Learn more about Myofunctional Therapy & Sleep Apnea.

What’s Wrong With Mouth Breathing?

Mouth breathing deprives your body and organs of vital oxygen. Nasal breathing mixes air with nitric oxide which increases the uptake of oxygen into the lungs.

Is Myofunctional Therapy New?

No, its roots in orthodontic treatment can be traced back to 1918. An orthodontist, Alfred Rogers, developed corrective exercises to help build tone in facial muscles to aid in the proper eruption of teeth. “Myofunctional Therapy” in name, was born and built upon in the coming decades. (Hanson, M. L. (1988). Orofacial myofunctional therapy: Historical and philosophical considerations. International Journal of Orofacial Myology)

How Do I Know If I Have A Myofunctional Disorder?

Often an evaluation starts with a consideration of symptoms. Snoring, persistent mouth breathing, crowded teeth, low resting tongue posture, restricted tongue movement, speech concerns, digestive issues, chronic congestion, frequent choking, chronic anxiety, just to name a few. Evaluation of symptoms starts with the Discovery Paperwork and Free Assessment. Ultimately a functional assessment is needed as well, and this is part of the Comprehensive Exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Myofunctional Therapy? In short, its neuromuscular training for the muscles of the face and mouth to address dysfunction or faulty habits, or to optimize craniofacial development in children. Sometimes orthodontics/expansion or Tongue-Tie release is needed in conjunction with therapy.

How are appointments scheduled?

Once the Comprehensive Exam is completed, and the proposed therapy plan has been reviewed and accepted, you will receive your Myo Tool Kit in the mail and Welcome to Therapy! email. You will then be able to schedule your appointments online. We will schedule your guided therapy sessions approximately every 3 weeks for 30 minutes.

Why is therapy virtual?

Myofunctional Therapy consists of a progressive, prescribed plan of exercises to be performed by the client for a period of at least 3 weeks before moving on to the next set of exercises. It is not a hands-on type of therapy. Virtual sessions will save you time and money.

How does the billing process work?

Comprehensive exams must be paid in full at the time of booking. Therapy programs can be paid in full prior to starting treatment for a discount, or split into 4 monthly payments with the 1st payment due prior to start.

Tell me more about your cancellation/refund policy?

No refunds are given as you can’t “return” the services you are receiving. Cancellation of booked sessions must be made 48 hours prior to your appointment. Rescheduling is based on therapist availability.

How do I submit to my insurance?

Upon request, you will receive a Super Bill detailing therapy sessions/costs to submit to your insurance provider. Any contact with your insurance provider is solely your responsibility as I do not accept insurance at this time.

Why choose me for your therapy?

As a registered Dental Hygienist for the last 12 years, I started feeling as though i was treating just the mouth, and sometimes just the symptoms rather than the whole person. There is no denying correlations between oral conditions/ function and overall health. I believe in addressing root causes and that led me to train as an orofacial myofunctional therapist, a type of additional education open only to certain healthcare professionals. Myofunctional therapy is not a magic bullet. if anyone tells you that any kind of treatment or therapy can solve all your problems, that is simply not true. But Myofunctional therapy may be a piece of the puzzle for you or your child to optimize health and development.
